Eugene Shackleford, 65, was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, to Earl Shackleford and Edna Shackleford and was one of six children. Eugene graduated from Essex County Vocational High School in 1977 with a focus in carpentry. Shortly afterwards, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served as a boiler technician. During his 17 years of service, Eugene traveled the world—visiting places he had never imagined—before retiring from active duty in 1994. Continuing his commitment to public service, Eugene went on to work for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command at Great Lakes Naval Station (NAVFAC) for another 24 years. He retired at the age of 62, leaving behind a lasting legacy of integrity, dedication, and excellence. Known for his strong work ethic and natural leadership, Eugene loved working with his hands—whether through his career, home projects, or lending a helping hand in the community and church. He had a sincere love for the Lord and a deep devotion to his family. He also enjoyed grilling, cooking, gardening, traveling, and playing dominoes. Eugene believed in creating joyful moments through shared meals, laughter, and quality time with those he loved. A true jack of all trades—though he often humbly referred to himself as a “master of none”—he led with quiet strength, passion, and loyalty.
Eugene was married to his beloved wife, Yuvatte Shackleford, for 30 years. Together, they raised two children (Daelane Shackleford & Dekayla Shackleford) and built a life rooted in faith, service, and gratitude. They were united in marriage under God on March 24, 1995, in the very church where we gather today to celebrate his life. Eugene was also a proud father to six children (Dekeria Daniels, Daziere Shackleford, Dichaela Hardges, Daleel Mccord, Deshana Shackleford & Dominique Shackleford) and a loving grandfather to eight grandchildren. Eugene is remembered and cherished by his siblings Saundra Patterson (Larry) – California, Earl Shackleford (Maria) – New York, Milton Shackleford – Arizona, and Timothy Shackleford (Angela) – Arizona. He was a provider, a protector, a role model, and an all-around people person. His legacy lives on through his family, faith, friends, and the many lives he touched along the way. He also leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved Aunt Lynda Venson, Uncle Vincent Venson, his mother-in-law Mae Arterson, his daughter-in-law Nakiah Shackleford and his dear friend Mario Torres, whom he considered not only a brother but also close family. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends, all of whom he cherished deeply.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Shackleford, and his brother, Charles Shackleford.
Friends and family will meet for visitation on Saturday, July 12, 2025 from 10AM-11AM at Christian Fellowship Church of Lindenhurst, 630 N. Beck Road, Lindenhurst, IL. A Celebration of his Life will then begin at 11AM.
