Gregory Graves

Gregory Graves
February 16, 1963 – July 21, 2026

Gregory Graves was born on February 16, 1963, to Thomas Earl Graves and Modenia Ball Graves at Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Illinois. From the very beginning of his life, Gregory faced extraordinary challenges. Born with Sickle Cell Anemia, doctors believed he would never live beyond his adolescence. Yet, by God's grace, Gregory defied every expectation, living a life that became a testament to faith, perseverance, and the power of God's promises.

At an early age, Gregory accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ in Evanston, Illinois. He had a deep love for music and served by singing in the Sunshine Band Choir and the Junior Choir. As an adult, he became a faithful member of Christian Assembly Church of God in Zion, Illinois, where he boldly shared his faith by going door-to-door witnessing and encouraging others to know the Lord.

Gregory was known as a true fighter. Despite the physical challenges he endured throughout his life, he never allowed his illness to define him. His unwavering faith in God, his love for Scripture, and his determination inspired everyone who knew him.

Family meant everything to Gregory. He cherished every opportunity to spend time with those he loved and had a remarkable gift for remembering everyone's birthday. His thoughtfulness, kindness, and genuine love for others will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends. He maintained a special closeness with Cousin Jeff Ball, and always enjoyed laughter with Cousins Tony, Brian and Tarellus Griffin and Stacy (Griffin) McKnight.

Gregory was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Earl Graves; his brother, James Harvey Graves; and his sister, Sonya Tamane Graves.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved son, Gregory Montrell Branch; his devoted mother, Modenia Ball Graves; his brother, Douglas (Kimberly) Graves; his sisters, Albertina (William) Hutchison, Tonya Friar, and longtime friend, Patrice Branch.

He is also lovingly remembered by his nephews, Daniel Issa, Rushaud Issa, Will Reynolds, and Carlton Reynolds; his nieces, Akilia Fortier, Latoya Booth, and LaTonya Reynolds; along with a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends who will miss him greatly.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to his niece, LaTonya Reynolds, whose loving care, compassion, and unwavering dedication blessed Gregory throughout the past several years. Her selfless devotion brought him comfort and dignity and will always be remembered with deep appreciation.

Gregory's life was one of courage, faith, and unconditional love. Though he fought many battles, he never lost his trust in God. His legacy of resilience, compassion, and steadfast faith will continue to inspire all who were privileged to know and love him.
