James Atkinson

May 6, 1955 — June 25, 2014

James Atkinson born May 6, 1955 passed away peacefully at Journey's Care Hospice facility in Barrington on June 25th. His loving partner and caregiver, Vicky and their dog Roxy were by his side. Jim fought a courageous battle with kidney cancer and left us far too soon. Jim was born in Waukegan and raised in North Chicago where he worked for more than 30 years as a postal service worker. He retired from the Post Office three years ago. He was a long time member of Tiny's Social Club and an officer of the Zion Benton Moose Lodge. Jim lent his skills as painter, carpenter, cook, server, bartender, and grill master to more people and charity events than can be counted. He played Santa and/or elf for resident members of The Kiley Center and NorthPointe Resources in Zion for several years. Jim loved our Chicago White Sox and Bears and enjoyed competing in pool, cribbage, and bowling. He was a worthy friend and role model to all who knew him. He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter; Jennifer Atkinson (Jason Clark), a son; James Jay Atkinson Jr., three sisters; Starr Atkinson, Shelly (Wally) Jakaitis, and Kathy (Barry) Delk, one brother; Elmer "Butch" Atkinson, a dear brother in-law; Greg Ptasienski, his soul companions; Vicky and Roxy, three grandsons; Jaden, Charlie & Tobias, and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; Bud and Sis Atkinson and one sister; Diane Ptasienski. Visitation will be Sunday, June 29, 2014 from 1pm-4pm at Warren Funeral Home. Funeral services are Monday, June 30, 2014 at 11am with visitation one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Fr. James Merold will officiate. Burial will follow at Warren Cemetery, Gurnee.
