John W. Kraft, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025. He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years and travel companion Cynthia "Cindy" Kraft nee Colby; his loving children Becca (significant other, Danielle Kirby; and beloved pup, Buckley) and Alan Kraft; and his precious puppy Scout. He is a cherished cousin and friend to many who will miss him deeply. He is preceded in passing by his proud parents Albert “Bud” and Margaret Kraft.
John’s journey is one shaped by his unwavering determination and corny jokes. Growing up he was a gifted athlete from baseball and gymnastics, to pole vaulting. While playing football in high school an accident led to a stroke damaging 2/3 of his brain, leaving half of his body paralyzed. He participated in ground breaking rehabilitation programs throughout the country relearning to walk and talk. At the same time, he graduated high school with honors and continued his academics at the University of Illinois where he proudly carried his drafting board across campus and earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering with honors. He viewed his time on this planet as a gift that he needed to make the most of. While stoic, even he cried when his Cubs won the world series. He lived an active life with his family, especially loving their “adventure trips” and participating in his kids’ activities. When he wasn’t on adventures, he cherished movie nights with his friends and family. Later in life John had another stroke, he saw this as an opportunity to participate in more research studies and demonstrate the power of physical therapy for countless people enduring similar challenges. After years of PT, he picked up where he left off and saw the world.
Friends and family will meet for visitation on Sunday, September 28, 2025 from 1PM-5PM at Warren Funeral Home, 1475 N. Cemetery Road, Gurnee, IL. The following day, Monday, September 29, 2025 we will return for visitation at 11:30AM, followed by the funeral service at 12PM. Interment to follow at Warren Cemetery and Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, https://www.sralab.org/give-now, in John’s name would be greatly appreciated.
