John Portegys, 90, of Waukegan passed away on Friday, October 24, 2014 at Lake Forest Hospital. He was born on June 15, 1924 in Libertyville. He is survived by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann (Greg) Bretzlauf of Grayslake; one grandson, Harold Bretzlauf. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter, Sr. and Gertrude Portegys; beloved wife, Ann Portegys; three brothers and five sisters.
John was a WWII United States Army Air Force Veteran who maintained B-29s in Tinian, Burma, and India. He was a devoted husband and compassionate caregiver to his wife, Ann, during 58 years of marriage. A kind, gentle, and generous father and grandfather, John treated everyone with respect and always maintained a sense of humor. He enjoyed traveling, bicycling with his buddies, cross country skiing, and attending 40th Bomb Squadron reunions.
A private family graveside service will be held at Warren Cemetery, Gurnee.
