Matthew William Jewell ~ February 9, 1972 - November 3, 2025
A Beloved Son, Brother, Uncle, and Friend
Matthew “Matt” Jewell passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025. Matthew is survived by his Mom, Joan Jewell; sister, Sandra (Dario) Fioretti-Frank; sister, Rebecca Mazur (Michael Lawson); nephew, Jonathan (Taylor Lantz) Flament; and brother William D. Jewell (Jennifer and family). Matthew was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Anne Jewell (October 2008); brother, Joseph Jewell (April 2020); and his father, William V. Jewell (May 2024).
Matthew was born with a very adventurous spirit with many chapters to live. There were pages about traveling thousands of miles on a plane and then on a high-speed rail and shuttle (Matthew was a kid at heart for any type of train) from Amsterdam to visit the flower gardens that were filled with bulbs in full bloom at the Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands. Matthew enthusiastically rode thousands of miles on his bike throughout Lake County with stops to eat and spend time with friends and family, although he would not hesitate to start a conversation with a friendly stranger. The smell, look, and taste of food and beverage were a daily passion that were enhanced by Matthew’s fondness for fresh vegetables purchased at the local farmer’s markets. He was very successful at growing (his smile and laugh was contagious upon seeing the first pop of green from what he had planted) his own variety of vegetables (among other plants) to accompany a perfectly cooked steak, piece of chicken, or fish meal.
Reading and learning were an unending mission that gave Matthew even more to talk about and refreshed his need for adventure. He was a master puzzler whether it was taking apart something electronic to study, strategically fix, and reassemble or piecing together a 5,000+ puzzle. He was cautiously fearless with high voltage devices during his time as an electrician and pursued a variety of ways to enjoy the need for speed. Matthew was a talented computer and network engineer who demonstrated a strong interest for the investment industry. He enjoyed the outdoors through golfing, fishing, picnics, and concerts. His attendance of theatre and symphony productions helped us to expand our appreciation for the arts.
Matthew had so many great stories to share throughout the chapters of his life, and those daily conversations will be cherished and missed. For those who loved Matthew, we are grateful to have been a part of even one chapter. His final chapter was to be at peace, and he was.
As a member of the Chicago Botanic Gardens, Matthew made several trips to the gardens throughout the seasons. If you wish to make a donation https://www.chicagobotanic.org, he would say thank you with a smile. Additionally, he would strongly encourage you to visit the gardens to add the experience to your life’s chapter, especially when the bulbs are in bloom.
