Robert Owen Peckinpaugh, 96, passed away on June 4, 2018 in Sun City, AZ. He was born on January 1, 1922 in Mishawaka, IN to Ellis J. and Hazel G. (Deisch) Peckinpaugh. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister, his first wife, Betty, and a daughter, Carol. He is survived by his second wife, Donna, two sons Robert, Jr. (Nancy), Bradenton, FL, James (Rosalie) Grayslake, IL, three grandchildren Derek Gaarder, Windsor, CO, Allison Gaarder, Godfrey, IL, Erin Green (Michael), Boulder, CO and 5 great grandsons Broggan, Anderson, Jentzen, Tennyson and Atlas.

Robert attended Riley High School in South Bend, IN, Franklin College in Franklin, IN, Indiana University in Bloomington and Indianapolis IN and University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. He earned his B.S., M.D. and M.P.H. degrees. He interned at the Naval Hospital, Long Beach, CA and had an internal medicine residency at the Naval Hospital, Bethesda, MD. He was certified by the American Board of General Preventive Medicine. He served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years retiring in 1972 with the rank of Captain. His duty stations included Naval Hospitals Naples, Italy and Great Lakes, IL. He served on the Naval hospital ship USS Consolation in Korea. His last duty was as Commanding Officer, Naval Medical Research Unit #4. Great Lakes, IL, in 1972. While in the Navy, he was awarded eight service medals and decorations including the Meritorious Service Medal. Before retiring in 1986 he was employed in clinical research by Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago, IL. During his career he authored or co-authored over 35 scientific articles dealing primarily with infectious diseases.

He belonged to the United Methodist Church, American Medical Association, Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, Infectious Diseases Society of America, Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, Society of Medical Consultants to the Armed Forces, Military Officers Association of America, Indiana University Alumna Association, University of Michigan Alumna Association and the American Legion Post 94 of Arizona.

He held volunteer positions in the American Cancer Society, Military Officers Association, and Consolation Reunion Committee, several golf organizations and Organ and Keyboard Club. He played golf, took lessons on the electric organ, completed numerous computer projects and traveled. He thoroughly enjoyed his life.
Visitation will be held on Saturday June 23, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. followed by his funeral and inurnment at 11:00 A.M. at Warren Funeral Home, 1475 N. Cemetery Rd. Gurnee, IL.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Scholarship fund of Franklin College, 101 Branigin Blvd., Franklin, Indiana, 46131 or Luke Chapter Scholarship Fund MOAA, P.O. Box 5072 Sun City West, Arizona 85376.
